2010 Inspiration Awards

 

Lonna Pelton-Bloom with husband, Mike Bloom.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Lonna Pelton-Bloom has dedicated her expertise and energy into the development and growth of school-based health centers. Working as a Physician Assistant in school health for over 28 years, she started in 1979 in Alamosa with the development of school-based health centers. From 1997 to 2001, she started SBHC's at Lake Middle School and Cheltenham Elementary and provided the medical role. She then moved to Rocky Mountain Health Clinics and worked at Escuela Tlatelolco in Denver and an alternative high school in Fort Collins until 2008. In the fall of 2008, Ms. Bloom moved to Greeley to provide the primary care role in the Kids' Care Clinic, where she currently works.

Individual Medical Provider: Dr. Sarah Winbourn is Medical Director and Pediatrician for  Community Health Services. CHS  serves Adams County School Districts 14 and 50. Since joining CHS in September 2008, Dr. Winbourn has initiated partnerships on behalf of CHS with health organizations including Kids in Need of Dentistry, Live Well Commerce City, and The Children's Hospital, to name a few.

Mental Health Provider: The Denver School-Based Health Centers work to eliminate barriers to receiving mental health care by providing high quality full-time mental health services in all 12 Denver Public Schools SBHCs. The mental health therapists work cooperatively with the physical health clinician, school social worker, school psychologist and school nurse to provide an integrated approach to addressing the student’s social and emotional wellness. The Denver Health SBHC team works in collaboration with the Mental Health Center of Denver (MHCD) who provides 7 full-time therapists while Denver Health therapists staff the other 5 existing DSBHC clinics.

School Health Professional: Liz is the Health Services Coordinator for the entire Greeley Evans School District, directs and manages their Medicaid program and has written the grants for and obtained funding for their first school based health center and is hoping to expand this year with further funding.  A nationally Certified School Nurse, Liz is the Past President of the Colorado Association of School Nurses, and now serves as CASN's Co-Treasurer. She currently serves on the Board for CASBHC.

Community Partner: The Manuas Fund  provides the technical assistance and seed money to launch programs that improve long-term financial sustainability. Of particular note is the Fund's commitment to increasing access to affordable health, especially for under-served populations and increasing the financial stability of the Roaring Fork School Health Centers.
