Rocky Mountain Chapter SAM Annual Meeting: April 26, 2006


The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Society for Adolescent Medicine will celebrate its 25th anniversary at the annual dinner meeting on Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at The Wellshire Inn. The festivities will include dinner and presentation of the 2006 Kathleen Ann Mullen Award to David W. Wells, MD. Dr. Wells is Medical Director, Division of Youth Corrections, CDHS. Health Care Spending Reaches New High

Medica Foundation – Behavioral Health and Racial Disparities Grant Program


The Medica Foundation funds community-based programs and initiatives that can provide sustainable, measurable improvements in the availability, access, and quality of healthcare. There are two funding priorities for 2006: 1) Behavioral Health: Filling the Gaps, a program that develops capabilities or changes processes related to behavioral health care service interventions, accessibility, and sustainability; and 2) Reducing Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care and/or Enhancing Cultural Competency, a program that identifies gaps in health care for diverse populations and develops programming related to the identified racial and ethnic disparities. The Department of Agriculture's Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service supports the National Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program to fund research on key problems of national and regional importance in biological, environmental, physical and social sciences relevant to agriculture, food, the environment, and communities. The Human Nutrition and Obesity program addresses the complex problem of obesity prevention. Deadline: June 16, 2006. House Bill 1396, SBHC Funding


On April 9, Representative Andy Kerr, Colorado’s newest legislator, introduced HB 1396 which authorizes the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to make grants to sustain existing school-based health centers and to assist them in expanding services to include mental and dental health services as well as to plan and fund new SBHCs. The Department would be allocated $1.2 million dollars for this purpose. Please contact your legislators and the governor and ask them to support HB 1396
