Minor Consent Laws

Psychotherapy Services

  • Colorado House Bill 19-1120 went into effect in 2019, lowering the age of consent for psychotherapy services to 12 years old.

  • The National Law Review provided highlights of the bill.

  • Note, HB 19-1120 does not allow for minor consent for psychiatric services; the bill specifies which providers and services qualify for consent.

Substance Use Treatment

  • In Colorado, minors of any age may consent for substance use treatment without parental knowledge or permission.

  • More details on this topic can be found in Colorado law (starting on page 227)

A great resource for minor consent laws; however, it has NOT been updated to reflect the change in age of consent for mental health services sited above (HB 19-1120)

CASBHC is providing these resources for ease of access to information and is not providing legal advice. Please consult with your organization for any legal concerns.
